An ideal route to admire the ancient places of the Tuscan hills
In this territory, in South-East Tuscany, an area of uncontaminated nature and breathtaking views, buildings and structures are preserved, sometimes almost intact, sometimes mere military fortifications or real medieval castles with real inside own villages. Places full of charm and history.
In Civitella in Val di Chiana, a northern municipality of the Valdichiana Aretina, you can admire the remains of the Rocca, built by the Longobards, heavily damaged during the Second World War. The medieval structure was formerly used as a village with large fortifications, a land disputed for centuries because it was a place of passage between Valdichiana and Val d’Ambra.
Not far from the town of Monte San Savino is the Castle of Gargonza, built on a hill and perfectly preserved. Dante stopped here in 1302, fleeing from Florence and it was inhabited until the 1970s by local families.
The view from the castle on the Valdichiana is simply and the atmosphere decidedly suggestive.
In Lucignano, instead, the Castello del Calcione, first used for military purposes and then converted to agriculture. It still houses important works of art and from the garden you can enjoy a privileged view over the valley. The Calcione dam, one of the largest artificial reservoirs in central Italy, is part of the estate, but don’t be fooled by the term “artificial”: having been built in the 1970s, it has been completely renaturalized and its banks are wooded and thickly vegetate along most of its perimeter.
From the Castello del Calcione to Lucignano which with its Cassero, symbol of the village, which has an elliptical urban plan, surrounded by mighty walls.
From Lucignano, one of the “most villages in Italy” to Marciano della Chiana, and its imposing tower, symbol of the municipality from which you can enjoy a splendid view.
In Castiglion Fiorentino one of the most beautiful and well-preserved castles in Tuscany, the Castello di Montecchio Vesponi, a proud and majestic medieval stronghold. A few kilometers away is the center of Castiglion Fiorentino, with the Cassero and the 35-metre high tower. The Fortezza del Girifalco watches over the town, a military fortification that has never suffered any attack.
In some of these castles it is possible to stay, others are used as exhibition spaces, still others are livable on a daily basis.
Valdichiana Aretina awaits you!
